Ukraine really shouldn't be diminished, but I agree - the scope of what was going on with China is just an order higher. And consider, selling out to a gas company in a country of a general ally like Ukraine is one thing, but selling out the the US's #1 geopolitical foe? Hmmm. I don't think the normies will like that all that much.
