There is usually a contract signed with repair shops that specifies what happens when you don't pay or pick up your equipment. In this case, the laptop (and its data) appears to have been legally owned by the shop when the files were copied. If Hunter wasn't an idiot and paid his bill, this would have never seen the light of day.

When the PC repair company saw what was on his hard drive they reported it to the FBI who quickly swung by to pick up the laptop and presumably destroy it to protect Joe Biden.
Luckily for America the PC repair company imaged the hard drive beforehand.
They didn't "hack it" because Jackass McRetard gave them the goddamn login password to his account, which on a Mac also tends to be the admin password.
It's not like any unencrypted Windows 10 PC where you can just boot it up with a Linux password cracker and be into the whole thing in about 5 minutes.
Macs have their hard drives encrypted by default now.
To copy the drive one would need to know the password to the local user/admin account.
Anyone who tells you that laptop was hacked is a) lying to you and b) not denying the info on the laptop and c) trying to distract you from the real story.

Happened to me and several other people in a nanosecond.
The computer was dropped off for repair and then abandoned. It is common practice for repair companies to have customers sign a contract at the time of service. Language in those contracts typically states that if you do not pay for service, after a certain date, the laptop becomes the property of the repair company.
Tldr; the laptop was owned by the repair company and is perfectly legal for them to do whatever they wanted with the data on the laptop.
