Well, kind of, yeah. But the "Christian version of sharia" is don't commit murder, don't steal things, don't cheat on your wife, don't spread lies and false accusations, honor your parents, love your neighbor, pay your taxes, take care of widows and orphans...

"don't commit murder, don't steal things, don't cheat on your wife, don't spread lies and false accusations, honor your parents, love your neighbor, pay your taxes, take care of widows and orphans"

I'm an atheist and I'm happy with all of things except "pay your taxes" because they really piss me off

Honestly, I don't mind the taxes. It's the fraud, waste, and abuse they're used for that ticks me off.

I would like to see the deliberately confusing system trashed and replaced with a straight sales tax/tariff scheme, but I'm not ready to go full anarcho capitalist yet.

Agreed. I don't mid paying "taxes" but something I say to anyone who will listen:

The progressive income tax is an immoral construct designed to prevent the acquisition of wealth in order to favor those who already have it. The fact it also provided for an explosive growth in government at all levels is a bonus, because it gives those same people, who also control the government, even more power.

True, but since the advent of easily "printable" money, they don't even actually need the taxes for government growth. The current tax law is written exclusively as a way to control behavior directly, and to obscure the true price of government.

In reality, only end consumers actually pay taxes. All forms of taxation end up rolled into the price of goods and services at the till one way or another, including the "employees' share" of payroll taxes. If more people could directly see exactly what portion of their spending is going to the government, their attitudes towards the size and power of government would likely change dramatically.

As it is, they use penalties, deductions, and "refunds" to influence buying and spending behavior while completely obscuring how much of people's buying power is actually being sucked up by the state.
