Munchausen's syndrome is a mental illness where you fake a real (generally not mental) illness, but you don't do it "on purpose", meaning you don't do it consciously.

Munchausen's syndrome by proxy is where the person suffering from it fakes a real illness in another person, again, not really consciously.

Munchausen's syndrome by proxy is almost entirely a disease afflicting MOTHERS, but it's a disease with VICTIMS, and the victims are the mother's CHILDREN.
