I think Obama is going out to campaign because they realize Biden is losing and they are desperate for him to win so they don't all get prosecuted for their crimes.
Republicans will not be voting by mail. The numbers are not really useful until we get closer to election day and in-person early voting is in full swing.
Obama was reluctant to endorse Biden at first. Likely because he knew the shit they were in together and what a liability he was. Once it was clear Biden would be the Dems main guy, they started backing him. Likely because they realised he was their best hope of keeping everything shut down.
