He had a rare form of pancreatic cancer but it was one of the easier ones to deal with since it grew slower. Aggressive treatment (which anyone in his wealth position would have available, even in the early 2000s) on top of diet changes probably would have kept him alive longer but he just went with alternative medicine initially.
