USA Today is the most dumbed down newspaper in the US, it was created to serve the 'dumb people' market. One of it's founding principles was that it would be written at a sixth grade level - at a time when newspapers were generally written at a high school senior level.
Funny you should mention it, as I remember being in grade school when for the first time I can recall happening, the whole class received copies of the brand new paper. I am reasonably confident it was sixth grade. Oooh color! Likely dropped it because the crossword was a smidge more challenging than TV Guide.
Not to praise the NYT, but I do miss Eugene T. Maleska's crosswords.
