Long before Pepe, a black and white picture was traded around on fax machines. It was a cartoon of a frog choking a bird that was trying to swallow it.
The caption was "Never Give Up"
10 years ago, give or take, there was a special election in Massachusetts. A Republican from the State Senate went head to head against a well-known Democrat in a statewide election. The state was so blue there were only 5 Republican State Senators.
That Republican was Scott Brown and he went against the State Attorney General who had already won state-wide election.
Brown was supposed to put on a show, then lose. That's the way it is for Republicans in blue states.
There were a number of one time occurrences in this race. It was a special election. The US Senate badly needed the seat to stop Obamacare. There was nothing else politically going on at the nationwide level.
Money poured into the state on both sides.
Brown made the right moves and said the right things. His opponent, Martha Coakley, convinced she didn't need to work it, didn't. Then stars had to align.
They did.
Scott Brown won by 5%. Compared to what it "should have been", this was a landslide.
He demonstrated Republican victory is possible even the darkest blue of the blue, in the toughest of races.
If conventional wisdom was followed, no Republican would have fought this hard because the Democrat was a lock.
Hawaii, Massachusetts. Vermont. Maryland. D.C. California. New York.
It is possible to win. It is possible to win everything.
Good reminder.
