Nice l did a bit of Elk hunting back in the Cascade good old days ,before they turned it into a cluster fuck & destroyed the quality of the herd.Lets hope the new regs they are proposing sought it out.

Have the fires limited your options for access much? Nice choice of calibre have used various 300's for years my current favorite Tahr & Chamois ,Elk & Deer rifle is a Custom 300 Norma Magnum.

You can be proud of carrying that rifle then ,is it a old Remington 700 BDL hard to see upside down & with the lighting ?

Here is the rifle l built l took on the latest hunt a Custom 338 Edge,l dropped that Wild Hog at 1235 yards.

Tell your Gran Pa hi from Montana & may he have many more years hunting.

Not normally, we are very lucky & have a loyal clientele so have a full book most years ,but if you are ever heading this way let me know .l get as much thrill out of helping others have a successful hunt & maybe imparting a bit of helpful hunting etc knowledge as much as anything now .

The trouble is as soon as this Chyna Flu BS is over & international travel gets back to normal we have a huge back log of international hunts as everyone wants to do their Bucket list hunt,no way l am flying anywhere you have to keep a fucking mask on though.

Those wild hogs are so nasty but damn they make some good sausage

They really make a great sausage as they have a good fat layer in them naturally.

No Wild Hog is a hugely sought after product worth millions in Europe, where it is highly sought after for the making of Salamis etc. etc. Back when Chernobyl happened they were sending something like $50 million a year worth to the EU. Back at the end of the 90's l went & did 2 seasons as a Helicopter shooter in Australia ,where guys were still becoming Millionaires supplying the Wild Hogs to chillers for the Eu Market .

The winds spread the radioactive contamination from Chernobyl over the EU forests where they sourced the Wild Hogs for their markets .Australia being so remote & 'clean' & with more Wild Hogs than people by a factor of 2 stepped up & made bank supplying them .I was really lucky as l was asked to go partners in a helicopter operation & while we tossing it over the market collapsed because some greedy idiot tried to run improperly refrigerated carcasses through the supply chain . The market crashed within months & by then the EU authorities had approved game to come out of areas they had tested ,the price of Wild Pork went up 600%.

Like any animal, even farm raised, as long as you properly chill/butcher & inspect a Wild Hogs Carcass it is a really good meat. We here in America should be exporting Wild Hog now as many do not realize there is a huge threat to even our farmed Pork from another virus China has let loose on the world,African swine fever that in China alone has wiped out 40% of Chinas 440 million pigs, if it reaches here we are going to have a huge problem in our Agricultural sector.

Here being a Rancher & Guide l do a bit of reading on things city folks probably did not know existed ,like l say l have been thinking of opportunities here for developing a export Wild Hog business model .

Just a while ago was reading this article on it looking like the Australians were going to try it again,so l saved it ,you may find it interesting -

Is reviving wild boar industry part of feral pig solution?

"I'm especially interested in understanding any commercial opportunities to help better control the feral pig population in Australia, which is estimated to be up to 24 million head,"

There are a couple key issues to be aware of; mainly various parasites such as Trichinosis and Tapeworms, and some bacterial infections such as Tularemia. Safety from these boils down to two things:

  • Parasites: this is managed by either freezing all meat at -31degF (-35C) or lower for at least two weeks before cooking, and/or by cooking until well done through (minimum 145degF (63C)).

  • Bacteria: good sanitary handling especially when dealing with blood contact (eg, wear nitrile rubber gloves); cook meat well.

That's about it.

There is a lot of work involved once they hit the dirt here is one o my freezers at the moment (we live on a ranch so have multiple )& we have load in the walk min freezer we will start to make Ranch Elk Hams ,Ranch Salami made with Wild Hog & Venison (Elk & Deer) & Wild Hog Bacon,Ranch Venison/Pork sausages & my favorite Montana Hunters Free Range Wild Hog Pancetta .

We are Ranchers & Hunters , our family has fed the poor every Xmas since 1948, real food made from Game we Hunt & Cook , these Elk & wild Hog l just got will help feed 20+ under privileged families this Xmas .

Here is just some of meals he will provide ,we will also make a large amount of Venison/pork hamburgers & sausages from the trimmings so l estimate 20-26 families will have food on their plates .

Your doing gods work. I just moved from nyc to nj, but Montana is one state my wife’s family and I were strongly considering relocating to, but I work for the city and can’t just relocate in my line of work that easily.

8
TrailerTrashKilla 8 points ago +8 / -0

I am born & bred & my family were among the first Cattle Ranchers in Montana so we settled into our my Ranch Homestead now, it is smack in the middle of our 380 Acres, with a 40 yr lease off one of my Uncles on the surrounding 1800 Ac where we partner in running cattle .

I traveled around the world extensively for work & while was serving so we looked at a lot of places to settle but we could not find anything that suited us better than here .

My office now ,this is what we call our Montana Patriotic Red ,White & Blue on show every day in my 'office' -

2
TrailerTrashKilla 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don not even know what that is LMAO

3
Skuba718 3 points ago +3 / -0

Lol it’s actually a pretty good show. It’s basically the sopranos but the rancher version. Kevin Costner made and stars in it. They own the biggest ranch in Yellowstone and have to do corrupt stuff to keep the ranch from being over taken by developers looking turn it into a tourist attraction

2
TrailerTrashKilla 2 points ago +2 / -0

You may be right LMAO

3
Viking 3 points ago +3 / -0

Montana always seems like a good place to go if Colorado ever goes 100% down the shitter.

2
TrailerTrashKilla 2 points ago +2 / -0

Like l say we had both traveled extensively & put a lot of thought into where we would settle before choosing here. When l got out of the Military l was actually being pressured into moving & working out of Texas but even then the larger cities were Libtard central & we both said a big no .

The main thing l like is we still have a bit of the Old West common sense ie good carry,self/property defense etc as a example I am lucky to have a 1600 yard range l built,my Ranch Homestead is smack in the middle of our 380 Acres, with a 40 yr lease off another Uncle on the surrounding 1800 Ac. l do a lot of Long Range hunting so it is regularly used with everything up to my 338 Lapua Magnums.

We are lucky in States like Montana we have a formal rural property code which are referred to as the "Code of the West", a caution adopted by a number of western counties. The Code warns newcomers wishing to locate in rural areas of the county not to assume that their rural road will be plowed immediately after every snowfall, that a farmer's field treatments may raise dust that will drift across the property line, that a rancher's cows may moo on the other side of the property-line fence all night, that if there is an emergency it may take an ambulance, fire truck or sheriff's deputy a while to respond, that rural areas may be subject to uncontrollable wildfires, and more.

Basically, the Code declares, people living in rural areas are and must be more independent, self-regulating and tolerant of local practices and customs than their city-dwelling cousins.

Just a couple of weeks back we finished building my Uncles new Custom 338 Lapua Magnum & my Custom 458 Lott,we had 4 of the local police come out & shoot them & a selection of other guns out to 1600 yards on my Range ,in most places they would be trying to shut you down.

Like every where we are seeing the Libtard creep from the cities they have destroyed ,but that has been going on for decades ,but really hit high gear when David Letterman brought his Ranch ranch near Choteau & then went on every TV show & magazine to get them to pay for his upgrades.I was just saying to my wife a couple of weeks ago l suppose we are just a couple of decades behind the likes of Texas & Cali etc in reality.

3
Viking 3 points ago +3 / -0

I do envy you but I’m young and I have time to make a decision on where I want to be, and to put in the work to get there. I live in Colorado currently and I love it to death but I see more Californians here by the day. I can only hope they are based Californians trying to leave that hell hole.

But I think CO is in the midst of heavy liberalization unfortunately, so no more purple CO. May have to make the pilgrimage north sooner than later.

What kind of work do they do up in Wyoming and Montana aside from ranching? It’s probably do me well to learn a little about what kinda work goes on so I could prepare myself.

3
TrailerTrashKilla 3 points ago +3 / -0

You have got your head screwed on right ,now for you is exactly when you should start seriously planning where your long term move will be. I was actually late as l served in Iraq & Afghanistan & then did a couple of years as a Contractor all around the shit holes of the world so l could make bank & set our Ranch up.

There are a lot of the Silicon Valley moguls moving here now so many are tipping Montana will be a leader in that in years to come ,but a lot of the young guys doing really well for themselves are working in the Oil & Gas as a lot of the Ranch bred guys already had extensive experience working on & driving Heavy equipment these guys are pulling big bucks & a lot only work 8 months a year

8
quarantinedeeznutz 8 points ago +8 / -0

Lmao I was actually thinking about giving you advice on getting that gamey taste out of that hog, but I was like nah he probably knows what he's doing. Clearly you do!

7
TrailerTrashKilla 7 points ago +7 / -0

Yeh born & bred on back country Montana Ranch's so we have always home butchered & prepared our own Beef & Game .We are from a long line of Hunting Guides that the family started after all the boys came back from the Second World War & needed extra money to fix the fencing etc that all needed repairing after no one was around to fix them for so long & the Government stole the Cattle. So we have all grown up butchering & preparing/cooking/smoking our own game & farm animals .

After being on here since before the first election, l have learnt we have some great butchers/cooks on this site we catch up from time to time to go over points ,tips etc .

Wild hogs are extremely nasty. The good thing is they are considered a nuisance species and there are basically no rules at all for hunting them in my state anyway. This includes baiting and night hunting. They turn every area they go into a muddy shithole. Most of them I've killed are covered in mud and shit lol. So first thing you rinse them off really good with a water hose, then you gut them and skin them. Then I think the trick is to leave it sitting in a cooler of ice with a drain plug for 2 or 3 days. Every few hours you open the plug and let all the bloody water out and then put new ice as needed on top. I take it to a meat processor and tell him to turn the entire thing into sausage. I'd love to see his face when he has to grind that those tenderloins into sausage

1
heysup 1 point ago +1 / -0

Seems like a lot of work. I normally just take out the back straps and let the coyotes and buzzards have the rest. Unless it’s a small one, then I gut it, skin it, and cook it whole over an open flame like a luau.

6
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 6 points ago +6 / -0

Wow wild hog bacon, how is it?

I can't understand how there's these big piles of free meat running around and there's still too many of them! Why aren't they being harvested on an industrial scale and made into dog food at least?

2
dixond 2 points ago +2 / -0

Because it takes time, effort, and money to do so - they're not free by any stretch. And the problem always with that sort of commercial control is that, eventually, the population declines, and as that happens it becomes more costly and less economic to harvest them. Tricky situation.

1
DrVSGGEOTUSPhD 1 point ago +1 / -0

If we could get these damn hogs down to a reasonable population with a permanent number of hunters they wouldn't be a problem.

I mean if there was a job where anybody with a pickup, a rifle, and a come-along could make decent money harvesting hogs don't you think there would be lots of guys doing it?

Maybe there could be a regulatory fix for this..is there a problem of not being able to market this meat? Could it be legalized or something?

1
dixond 1 point ago +1 / -0

Good question about regulation. There are a variety of potentially serious health risks that wild boar poses. I don't know what controls there are around marketing it commercially. If I remember the numbers right; in Texas they need to cull about 1,000,000 hogs a year just to keep the numbers static.
