If you can't handle the reality of watching mexican cartels decapitate victims and the chinese die on camera in every way imaginable then reality isn't for you.
Reality is such life changing perspective. Civilization as we know it is the exception, and is fragile.
Start reading the Gulag Archipelago, and start immediately. But fore warning, it is a very hard read. You will put it down, often, and that's ok. It's not viscerally gruesome, but spiritually so. The mind needs time to adsorb and reflect on the implications that ripple out from that historical account. So much of it are the first hand anecdotal examples that describe at the human level the over arcing stats and themes you already know. And when you start seeing the human level of 'how', and 'why', you'll find yourself often hitting a wall because your mind can go no further without processing all what you just read means.
Just keep chunking though it. Because it needs to be known.

Yup. Got to agree. This is what we are trying to prevent. Gore is a rather brute force red pill.
