I heard the opposite. Nixon was cheated out of CA. Much like all the crap Trump is having to deal with now (if there wasn't a landslide behind him) as far as rigging - which means vote hard, and bring friends.
Fraud in Illinois gave the 1960 election to Kennedy. Who was a liberal, but an anti communist. Nixon was even more anti communist, so there was no way for commies to win the 1960 election.
15 years later, Kennedy and his brother were dead, Nixon was forced from office, communists had won the Vietnam war, and the “new left” had gained complete control of the democrat party.

Illinois was certainly controlled at the time. It really wouldn't be a surprise if CA was, too.
