That's not what happened to Detroit. Manufacturing actually went to Japan (and other places), but this was a much more level playing field than the China situation today.
So why was Detroit unable to compete with Japan despite all their diversity strength? Surely they could have built the best cars with such diversity.

Once the manufacturing left, there was no tax base, a small population, and high crime.
If you want to see the effects of globalization, take the Detroit area as a place to study. The city itself was going under either way. The train depot, theaters, beautiful buildings, etc. weren’t destroyed simply because of Japanese manufacturing (which played a role).
