In some cities, you can't get into grocery stores without a mask. You want to walk into a store and buy food? You want to walk into your own apartment building? You want to take public transportation? You need to put on a mask. No one is "making" you wear a mask, but they're making life very difficult for you if you don't.

In countries like Japan that do have a culture around it, it’s 1) Never required 2) Primarily used by people ALREADY SICK and 3) Only used in areas with CLOSE CONTACT like on their crowded trains, which at peak times in Tokyo you can be so close you may literally bump uglies inadvertently.
Nobody wants to be sneezed on or see dripping boogers millimeters from their face. That’s all they are used for and they aren’t even effective technically, only for courtesy.
I completely agree that mask mandates are bad and should all be ended, except in specific cases dealing with highly vulnerable people.
However, saying "they are not needed period" is a bit of an overstatement. There are cases where they should be worn, and people who refuse to admit this are the other side of the obsession. If you go visit someone in a nursing home right now you will be required to wear a mask, and this makes sense.
Let me clarify what “they are not needed means” it means they are not needed as a universal mandate period.
Anyone who is vulnerable to Covid, as they are with the flu or any other common respiratory disease, among others related diseases as well, are welcome to take accountability for their own health by self quarantining and self isolating by making the decision to NOT see people who are sick. And additionally anyone who wishes to see vulnerable people must respect their wishes and their right to autonomy of self preservation and not force themselves as sick or asymptomatic carriers upon other vulnerable people against their wishes.
I think it would be fair to say that mask mandates are not needed and masks should be used when it makes sense, which any reasonable person will do when it's necessary.
I believe that NOT wearing a mask is one of the most powerful things we can do to fight this commie attack.
