in the 1500s, this prince would marry this countess to consolidate power

have people changed in 500 years? Not really. Same set of emotions, behaviors etc. Even the stories in the Bible describe human behaviors we recognize today. Love, hate, rivalry, envy etc. People are people.

How can we expect anything different?
