While I do partially agree with both of those statements, the way I see it the outcome OP described above is better for the society overall than the opposite one. Its a simple dilemma. Left panders to the minorities, right panders to the majority(correct me if I am wrong here). Its the classic save 1 person and let 10 die, or save 10 at the expense of 1 life. While you are saying that both outcomes are equivalent, I will have to disagree and say that 10 lives are more important than 1, from objective perspective. (Lets not get into, what ifs like if its you relative, or person who could cure cancer or what not) all 11 people in this thought experiment are of equal value. Saving 10 by sacrificing 1 is the best logical outcome.
