hmmm interesting because my HP printer was hackable in a way where I was able to use 3rd party ink - completely bypassing the proprietary function. So instead of me having to use $50 ink cartridges from HP, I bought $5 equivalents from Ebay and made it compatible. All it needed was a hacked chip attached on the end of each cartridge. Sort of like the chip you find on your debit cards.
