In 1776 a handful of people fought and won a revolutionary war against the most powerful nation on earth.

This would be the same, except the scale would be exponentially larger.

It is very worthwhile to read up on the individual stories and accounts from that time. There are a wealth of letters and other first hand accounts from just Average Joe people as well as writings of the big players.

Short version: It was a giant mess and more got done around tavern tables than anywhere else.

edit: It's also worth noting that none of the big players agreed on much and their first attempt at what came after was a complete failure. It wasn't pretty. At all. A lot of people died. It was a process of several decades overall and, even 2 centuries later, isn't complete. The beauty of the Constitution they knew things would never be complete.
