US soldiers don't experience this kind of war as a participant most of the time. The CIA does though. They usually do things like specialise in training Islamic extremists in asymmetric warfare. The US military would have a very hard time fighting a war in the USA the same as it might abroad. An example is that US lives are normally the priority. If something looks hairy just call in air support and blow it to high heaven. Collateral abroad doesn't really register that much on the public conscience.
