For $5k you might actually be able to buy a gun and ammo. My gut feel right now is 7.62x39 seems to be relatively easy and somewhat cheaper to get in bulk than 5.56 so go AK pattern. Buy many magazines. Buy at least 1k rounds of ammo more ammo is good, have enough to run the gun at the range. Palmetto State Armory had an AK back in stock earlier tonight. Be aware you might not legally have your new toy for long. For shotgun I'd suggest a pump 12 gauge and all the 00 you can find. Buy the pump because the mental paitent says he's coming after semi autos and pump guns are for hunting, except when they aren't. ;) The Mossberg Maverick 88 is a good start that seems to come in and out of stock frequently these days but if you're going high dollar there are better choices. If you can find one a Mossberg 590A1 is a solid choice. You can go with wood furniture to help obscure it's social work purposes. There isn't really a great rifle choice for home defense that's not semi auto. The best alternative would be a lever action. I like 3030 but for your purposes a Henry in .44 would be a good choice and .357 would get the job done for less money per shot. Personally I'd go with one of the All Weather models with a side gate. I hope you get something you enjoy and may you never have to use it against anything other than paper and steel.
