You can pick up a NEW Hi-Point 9mm for UNDER $200, or used for next to nothing. You can buy them in .40 S&W and .45 ACP for just a bit more. They are big, ugly, heavy, and don't have the best trigger, but a pretty durable.
I'd recommend spending the 50-100 bucks extra for something if you can afford it, but if you can't, or are looking to purchase SEVERAL, they DO work.
The only thing I'd say is if you are interested in a handgun, and not one you want in particular, but something you feel you NEED and need like NOW... I'd probably avoid 9mm and .380 if possible. Both of those ammo types are next to IMPOSSIBLE to find right now. Like, I think I've seen it in stock once in the last 5 weeks, AND there was a purchase limit.
