sex changes have been a thing in the US dating back to the 1960s

A fringe cosmetic surgery process mostly used experimentally (with no real success) mostly on people born with congenital malformations. Not something marketed to the general population as "normal" on TV, in schools, etc.

"Sex changes" have never worked. Even the best plastic surgeon in the world can't change a man to a woman, particularly in the genital region. It's mutilation. A surgeon doesn't "make" a vagina, they make an infection-prone wound that has to be prevented from healing ("dilation") for the remainder of the patient's life.

Up to a certain point, there was legit medical work going on here.

John Money, one of the primary "researchers" of this stuff in the mid 20th century, was a pedo quack.

Judging by the looks of some of these dudes who go through with it, low T was never an issue.

I see two flavors of "trans" on the teevee, one is basically ugly depressed men, usually rail-skinny or tubby, never fit, with the low-T look. The other is fairly fit men like Bruce Jenner, Chuck Clymer, and Katy Tur's dad, high or normal T men that want career progression after a stall or slip into irrelevance.

If someone has delusions of being Napoleon and depression because they're not Napoleon ("Napoleon dysphoria"), you don't cut off their legs and fit them with shorter prosthetics, give them a funny hat, and tell everyone to refer to them by their chosen pronouns emperor/your highness.
