Washington's famous river crossing was the Delaware, but he did grow up a handful of miles from the Potomac river (his childhood home is still standing and has a hell of a split rail fence going on) and no doubt he crossed it hundreds of times in his lifetime, probably a few of those during the Revolution. He was actually closer to the Rappahannock river, which is a lesser known tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. I own land in the area and I ain't goin lie... sometimes I kick back and think about how there's a chance he hunted on my property.
Edit to say... his childhood home is NOT still standing. It's a replica in the spot that the original home was. Man, what a bummer.
