I've heard it was Uranium toxicity from all the depleted Uranium rounds the USM used.
Thing is while its no longer radioactive. Depleted Uranium is still incredibly toxic chemically, far, far, far worse than lead, and it was fired into enemy vehicles where it was reduced to powder and set on fire in the expositions that then lined all of the Iraq battle zones with Uranium dust.
The troops were in turn NOT informed about this, and would approach enemy vehicles destroyed by DU rounds with no protection on. Had they just a simple N95 mask, a $0.50 piece of kit they would have been fine. And this is from a DoD that thinks munitions worth $2 million each are fine. They were exposed to non-radioactive Uranium and poisoned by it.

The USM of course DENIED everything about this to avoid all the lawsuits, which would have buried the DoD. Then very quietly they phased out of the inventory DU ammunition and replaced it with Tungsten, hardened steel, and other materials.
This was all covered up for many reasons. First and least was the fact that it looked really bad. 2nd and about as worthless to the Feds, was it soured any relations with Iraq or the Mid East to have coated a nation in toxic dust. But most importantly ALL of the infantry Vets from the Gulf War we have had a slam-dunk wrongful injurty lawsuits not only against the DoD, but also the companies that manufactured the DU ammunition. This is why the real cause of Gulf War Syndrome is burred in 70 foot deep hole next to who really shot Kennedy.
https://www.gulfwarvets.com/poison.htm another source backing this. DU poisonings was a VERY real thing.
