I think you reading into that too much. The people are animals because it's a cutesy little game for kids, and you DO eventually pay off the debt you start with if you work hard enough (you know, like a mortgage?)

Spez: they did make a point in the later games to let you be able to cross dress your character and encourage you to do it, so it's not perfect
