The Reich had a food and fuel shortage by 1939/40. They were going to starve, and their economy was going to collapse.

A long meeting on the pros and cons of the global market (satisfying German needs through trade) and self-sufficiency (read conquest) was held before any military campaigns, where Hitler's conclusion was that self-sufficiency was the way to go. Something he'd already thought of and rants about in his book of semi-coherent ramblings "Mein Kampf". They needed food, minerals, oil, pretty much everything but coal. This was to be realized in the east for various reasons (not wanting a war with France and/or Great Britain, eastern peoples being viewed as weaker, etc). One attendant transcribed most of what Hitler said. I can find it for you if you'd like to read it.

They were extremely nationalistic. Just not in the way you're used to seeing it manifest.

By the time they invaded the Soviet Union they were no longer able to feed everyone. Food was directed to the German heartland but in occupied France for example, more and more people were starting to go hungry.

The main purpose of the invasion of the Soviet Union was to conquer the fertile lands of the Ukraine and the oilfields of the Caucasus. That was the main reason.

Sure, both nazism and communism are marxist-based ideologies, but Hitler hated communism (my socialism is better than your socialism), especially bolshevik communism (Hitler believed the bolshevism was a Jewish creation). He did want to destroy the Soviet Union for that reason but the main reason was always self-sufficiency.

Making assumptions about history is unavoidable, but you're making too many since we actually have answers to questions about nazi motives.

They were nationalists. Just evil nationalists.

Hope this clears things up.
