Reminds me of this article I read about a town in Georgia I think, back in the 50s or so the mayor, police, judges were running the elections and faking the results. Local populace came out in overwhelming numbers so there was no dispute over who won. The police took the ballots and fled and holed up in the police station where the populace laid siege for two days straight and when they surrendered and got the votes, surprise, surprise, the were faking the whole election.
