I did 6 tours in remote COP's in Afghanistan,we only stayed sane from being sent decent movies to escape watching - here are my stand by's ,my family has served from WW2 ,Korea,Vietnam & me in Iraq & Afghanistan at every Xmas & Thanks Giving we still watch these -

Lawrence Of Arabia (full version pref) One of the greatest movies/cinematography ever made- recommend book

Westerns -

Tom Horn -IMO one of the greatest true Old West stories, recommend his biography as well .In A way very similar to times we face now ,with old values being thrown out & replaced with shitty new version. Steve McQueen fought for & sold his house to get the story told ,one of his last films.

Lonesome Dove - just epic Western-

Jeremiah Johnson - Brought & still occasionally hunt with a Hawken Plains Rifle - .50 cal rifled

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly -Classic

Legends of the Fall - IMO a under rated movie & weirdly relevant to what we are seeing now.

Crime

Bullitt - Classic Great Car chase

The French Connection - IMO best movie Gene Hackman ever made

Dirty Harry -All-

God Father -early better IMO-

Ronin

"Gomorra" Italian Mafia series well worth watching, like a cross between a foreign The Wire & Sopranos .Based on real events, involving all the way up to Italian PM's

War -

Thin Red Line -As a veteran this is one of the truest representations of life in combat ,up there IMO better than with the Saving-Pacific genre

Apocalypse Now-Nuff Sed

The Deer Hunter

Full Metal Jacket

Das Boot

Patton

Platoon

All Quiet on the Western Front

The Longest Day

The Sand Pebbles

Foreign must see war movies -

Breaker Morant - recommend book as well -Based on true story of a Australian legend during the Boer War & another reason why they are morons not now being a Republic. Another strangely relevant to events morons here & there are trying to do to our SF's & Combat Vets ie go fight a war for us but don't hurt anyone's feelings.

Gallipoli Australia (1981)

Stalingrad (Germany, 1993) - follows a battalion of elite German assault engineers as they deploy from sunny Italy to the farthest reaches of the Russia steppes. Their mission: To break the iron Soviet resistance in the rubble and bring the grinding battle to a victorious conclusion.

Come and See (USSR, 1985) Everyone should see this movie at least once it will shake you to the bone ,as a Combat Veteran l find it harder to watch than Saving Private Ryan .-

Set in occupied Byelorussia, the film covers a young lad who seeks to join the partisans and see the war. He gets his wish — and the viewer joins him as he descends into the abyss.

Sought of a Russian WW2 version of Apocalypse Now

White Tiger- Like a Russian Non gay & not full of pasty, noodle armed,. hollyweird douchebags version of Fury - It is just a cheesy war propaganda film like we used to make cool seeing the rusky version of it.
