The military has their smart, competent people, for high level jobs, and certain war missions. Then, they have a lot of useful idiots. They meet with troubled youth, special Ed students, etc, to recruit them for low level jobs and goon squad positions. They join because they have no other prospects in life, so may as well join the military. I know a girl who was in special Ed, from kindergarten through 12th grade. She joined the military right out of high school, 20 years ago. They kept her as a recruiter for 17 years. They switched her to another position at one of their medical facilities, then switched her right back to recruiting, because she’s dumb as a rock. She’s also a liberal who hates Trump, because tv said so. She’s not built to be a fighter or a guard, but a lot of recruits just like her, are put in guard positions. They don’t all join because they’re patriots. Don’t underestimate the number of useful idiots in the military.
