I was a fan of the series.

I don’t think anyone would have seriously given a shit about Jack romancing a female character.

They added the gay male Shepherd option (which was essentially a retcon to please non-gamers, but on the left) for the third game which was like 2 years later. Nobody on Fox News said anything.

Even the previous controversy was more a generalized attack on games. Not a specific attack on their specific game from what I remember.

Knowing the dev team they always loved selling the “idea” of choice but always hated implementing it. So this falls right in line with that philosophy. Likely just got lazy during crunch time.

The fact that they were able to stay true to their lore for the second game which was great, but not the third one with its disaster of an ending says a lot.
