Always dip in isopropyl alcohol and make gentle circles in the ear canal while inserting to gather wax, never push straight or go very deep. Cold sensation is good, if contact of alcohol with the walls of the canal is painful there may be scratches (keep fingernails out!) or inflammation (precursor to infection).
