Sessions finding out the FISA was illegal and immediately starting an investigation into it is the real story here. Recusing from the Russia probe wasn't a bad move, because it kept him from getting tied up into a bunch of bullshit, because let's think about how long it took and how many hours and how much money was wasted before it finally went nowhere.

Sessions would have been tied up in just one phony investigation and been mostly left unable to do any other actual, real work, like investigating the illegal FISA.
