I actually think it is - in many ways - an attempt to roll back the Protestant Reformation.
End of nation states. End of democracy. Illiteracy. Less mobile populations bound to their work. Corporate cities. Guilds. One religion.
And interestingly, the Habsburg family line and the Papacy are heavily involved in it in Europe.
