Hell, the requirement to be an officer is to just have a bachelors of any kind, and do OTS, then that gives you the authority to lead any enlisted while being as young as 22, which is pretty fucked. There's a list of legal trappings a mile long that give your superiors free reign to fuck you over if you step out of line, and these are not open to any interpretation most of the time. The pay is only just enough to live comfortably, having to rely solely on them for healthcare, education, and housing.
