Edit: it's far more arguable that American Quality of Life peaked around 1973, when the buying power of both the middle and bottom quintiles was at its highest. Workers were rich and homes were cheap. Higher education was affordable on a part-time income, you could have a family of four (with house and car) on a single entry-level income.
