The death penalty should be used sparingly but it absolutely must exist. It IS a powerful deterrent to crime. It doesn't always work that way but certainly does sometimes.

And society can also kill in self defense. Some people are too scary to leave alive, because they might someday escape, be paroled, get out somehow.

The death penalty carries a moral freight, too, as OP says. Society, and that is everybody, must say, "some acts are just too, too, bad to let you live. Bye."

Women and children of all colors need this protection.

So yes.

Anybody can kill in self defense. And society can also kill in self defense. Some people are too scary to leave alive, because they might someday escape, be paroled, get out somehow.

So yes.

Death should be swift, dignified, and not sadistic. Not done in the public square, but there must be observers. It must not be done in secret. The person gets a last meal, statement, and religious presence if he wants. But after that, he must leave.

Women and children of all colors need this protection. Men need it too, sure, but that's where it is obvious to start. The death penalty is very much a woman's issue. The executed one is often a man, and women are very much affected, usually, by what he did. Either he did it to one of them, or he left one of them a widow.

Society's weakest always need law more than its strongest. That ought to be obvious.

And of course every man ages a day every twenty-four hours. Every man is older and feebler than somebody who was born after he was.

So yes. OP is right.
