Those caught with texts of or sharing such knowledge were punished (sometimes horrifically), so those wanting to teach and those wanting to learn were forced underground.

Now church services are going underground, because the new religion that is "science" has deemed gathering for worship as unsafe and going against their conventionally accepted beliefs.
