I guess they think Napoleon also had to invade other countries to protect France's sovereignty.

Not sure how in depth you are going, but, the fact that France was invaded by a multitude of neighboring countries at the end of their Revolution and Napoleon was battling them, would fit the bill. So, yes, it was to protect France's sovereignty.
