I'm getting some incredibly creepy vibes from this thread. What the hell is going on when someone JUST says in an email,
“this is red meat to the media to find all ways to damage Google. I don’t know what would happen if the media starts picking up a theme that Google is secretly building AI weapons or AI technologies to enable weapons for the Defense industry,” [Fei-Fei Li]
She's like every fast talking Silicon Valley AI-researching corporate person, ever. Not some CCP sleeper agent. Concerned about her brand name against slurs by the ignorant and paranoid, more than a bit excessive with the 'AI' tag as if it is some secret sauce that makes everything more effective or fantastic.
It amuses me that a nation of gamers who crave ever more vicious computer adversaries could be so disassociated with reality they could fail to imagine some clever AI 'boss' on the screen could never be a drone you might come face to face with in real life. The coding is all done, folks! And YOU helped to play-test it.
When I was an ISP administrator I had plain text access to just about every mailbox in my city, and from time to time mail storms and mis-configurations in those days ('90s) required that bogus or spurious messages be removed from queue and storage. The necessary challenge then as it is now, was to build a script to do the necessary editing or extracting, such that the Administrator never even glimpses a bit of customer data. I was paid to do this but I took the concept as seriously as any mail carrier.
Well guess what people, Google has your plain text. You gave it to them and most of you don't even pay for anything at all, so the sense of entitlement I'm picking up is more like a socialist pitchfork mob than anything else. And I can see plainly that Google started out with every intention of preserving the ethical boundaries that I kept in the '90s ... to relegate the task of scanning sensitive data to scripts and the worshipped idol known as 'AI'.
'AI' would keep your data safe because it was smart enough to maintain it but yet too stupid to read what you were writing, over your shoulder.
Google probably scrubbed "Don't be evil" from its manifesto as a Canary warning rather than a license to go forth and do evil as goofy illuminati thinkers think. Why? Because Red-Blooded Americans sucked the dicks of Comey and Freeh and Brennan after 9/11 to give complete access of everything plain text to Spooks and Law Enforcement to 'keep us safe'. So when Obama and co. gorged themselves on surveillance of Trump like kids in a candy store, a diversion is needed. Yeah let's go after Big Tech who are just complying with the law.
China is a creepy place and it's great to take a stand but let's not smear everyone who has been involved with modern technology and draw stupid Joe McCarthy lines around them.
- Do you recall after 9/11 ... a fracas where terrorists were supposedly using Webmail interfaces (protected by https) to leave one another Marching Orders Of Doom saved locally as email drafts... such that the evil content never traversed the Internet in plain text for our Good Spooks to intercept? Cue a flurry of back door warrant laws. A totally American initiative.
- Do you recall that clever idea that Google could offer targeted advertising that was (oh so marginally) derivative of certain keywords in your email? We are not reading your mail, an 'AI' is doing that, and it has your best interests at heart. Because after all, you've demanded it be free forever and we're trying to figure out how to do that. A totally American initiative.
- Do you recall how fuzzy matches and advanced algos started to bring down Youtube and other videos for copyright infringement? A purely American initiative to train AI to match more 'subversive' content than ever before, and transcribe everything besides.
- And now Google is under fire for 'autocompletes' (not search results)? Helping Americans to spell out difficult words was always an American initiative.
SO if Google helps to build the Great Chinese Firewall, it's just a key-turn away from other initiatives they have been operating in plain sight, with our consent! Offering directed Ads for vintage car parts tp people who admit they own the car(s) in email ... is the exact same technology as the Chinese unmentioning of Falun Gong. Sorry Chinese readers for losing you, my whole post just disappeared!
Deep Content Inspection exists, now. It exists because it was inevitable. Google will try to monetize itself from it, China will try to lock down its populace with it. Those 'AI weapons' are just the AI reading over your shoulder and triggering actions. But who loads the keywords and the action routines? People. Just like the infantile Obama people, there are infantile radical political activists in tech companies.
So if Lei does anything evil at Twitter, you can be sure that it is probably a wholly American initiative by crazed political activists.
Oh and that Skynet bit about developing stuff for talking out humans and identifying friendlies, isn't that Biometrics turned on its ass? How many corporate shingles with Biometrics out there? Again, a key-turn away.
