The reason you cite is still consistent with the same explanation: If it was going to work, do it. If it's not going to work, don't give the enemy ammo. We know how badly the left behaves, and the fact that we're in the moral right is frankly the only thing we have going for us, except for "more guns." Being the actual good guys is the only thing that gives us a chance in hell of winning over the fence-sitters (and we need passive population support in any scenario), so if we're going to give the left ammo to muddy that with false equivalencies, we'd better be getting something extraordinarily valuable for that price.
