Black dude here, I've always heard 2 schools of thought about Black history month. Old timers say it's from an era when schools only had it because they'd never hear of important moments in black history. New schoolers have said those important moments should just be part of overall history.
Some have argued oh they gave black people the shortest month, why not make it June for Juneteenth and when people can get together for BBQs. Yes I love BBQs and hanging out, but kids aren't in school in June.
I feel like kids do need to be taught to praise and want to be those who have made black history rather than praising the worst people in mainstream culture. The inventors, ground breakers, doctors, surgeons, lawyers, those who fought for all our freedoms.
As for American history month, yes absolutely we should have it. Every nation should have their own history month.
With that said, I feel like I learned a heap of American history that decades later when statues were being taken down I had to look it all up again to see if I still remembered accurately decades earlier. Turns out yes I did remember accurately.
