I’ve thought about this also. I realized that all other North/central/South American countries have their own identifier term for their citizens. Since the USA actually has the word America in it, the world refers to us as ‘American’. Doesn’t mean any other country on these two continents are not ‘american’ of some degree, but they all have their own identifiers. Just my thoughts.
