My spouse is a professor of Russian and Soviet History, and says the same thing. And, I concur. Russia is not our enemy. I've been there numerous times and they're just as gregarious and rootin-tootin as we are--moreso, even.

They're a frontier people, too; they engaged in their own manifest destiny eastward expansion under the sponsorship of the Stroganoff family (yes, of Beef Stroganoff fame) just as we went west under Buffalo Bill Cody, John Muir and Leland Stanford; and, they had their own wild, nomadic horsemen to tame along the way.

They even did it the same way: firewater (vodka instead of whiskey) and reservations. They liberated their serfs the same time we freed the slaves and they have a multicultural population to deal with, too. We should make common cause with them across the Bering Straits with a causeway to link Siberia and Alaska. We should be great friends and partners with Russia...

But our leftists HATE Russia because they gave up on communism. They're done. That's why they have the strongman Putin in power: to keep communism from trying to make a comeback. Our leftists think of them as quitters and resent them for their sensibility.
