UPDOOTED: You are correct, that said...good doctors don't consider being really sad as you're describing.. depression...depression is not even considered a disease...it's 'Major Depressive Disorder' that is which is when it's long lasting and often for seemingly no reason...when things are actually going great for you even. I've actually truly suffered from this after a woman I was with for 7 years then engaged to cheated on me 3 weeks into the engagement, followed by a family member being killed two weeks after that. The meds certainly played their part and were a MASSIVE help. I stopped them three months later.
The good part about those meds with emotionally intelligent people is that they allow you to do things that bring yourself out of it. Things like exercise, eating better, socializing instead of isolating...This is what they are for. They are not meant to be for long term us.
The absolutely BAD part is...the VAST majority don't use them that way...they tell themselves it's permanent, continue to sulk and need to be on them for life...using them as a chemical band-aid.
The criminal part about them is...when doctors prescribe them to people for the reason you listed.
EDIT: I too don't consider it a disease btw...
