Yes, you're definitely onto something. The demand (leading to cost) for education far outweighs its value.
The issue is that on average a gender studies degree might be worth say $10,000 but the top 10% of gender studies majors end up being worth $400,000. The reality is that it's not truly the degree but the "connections" that are worth something. Many people looking to purchase an education see the top 10% and think that will be them instead of looking at the average so people end up paying $50k-200k for gender studies thinking it's worth it because of what the top 10% earn.
This is a huge problem for education. In a lot of ways it's kind of like gambling. On average you lose but everyone thinks they're going to be the lottery winner. Universities exploit this aspect of people, especially young people who've been told they're special their whole lives. Being top at some small town high school is meaningless for university and 17yo kids don't understand how to grasp this.
The reality is that public education should 100% be entirely defunded ESPECIALLY at the university level with 0 government involvement, including 0 government pledges to student debt. This would lead to a better result for society as a whole. Most people who get an education today, do not in fact need an education. Academia as a whole has changed from a place of learning to a mechanism of control by the State that looks to enforce its indoctrination on its citizens.
I don't know if you know this but the standards for university (to get in) were higher in the 1800s than they are today. Our quality of education has dwindled immensely. Most people who get an education are not intelligent and their education adds 0 value. They're simply removed from the workforce for 4-7 years which is actually a detriment to our economy. The only people who truly gain from the vast majority of education are the schools and politicians who utilize the indoctrination to enhance their wealth and power.
And I haven't even touched on the aspect of women going to university during their peak fertility years, fucking tons of different guys thereby ruining their ability to formulate attachments with men and pushing out the age at which they will have children (if they do) all in the name of education and career only to become a wage slave, likely not to have children and turn into a bitter cat owning man-hating feminist. What a huge detriment to the well-being of society as a whole. They talk about mental health? It's no wonder when we've taught a whole generation to value education and career over family.
/end rant.
