It really depends. You can get it expunged (convictions, as well as just arrest records). I was an addict years ago and had a number of arrests. Today, my record is fully clean, and no amount of searching can link any arrests or convictions to my name. I've passed security clearances, I have a conceal carry permit, have been run through FBI databases. Given what I was able to get expunged or cleared off my record in a short time, it won't be difficult for anyone arrested for protesting to -- at worst, 7 years is typically the timeframe (in most states) at which you can get convictions expunged, and earlier to have just arrests/charges cleared from your records
[edit - source: personal experience, work in public policy, uncle is a judge where I got this info from for my own records/past]
Another edit after further responses: this guy is straight up lying and made it clear he doesn't work in this field, if he does have experience it doesn't correlate to understanding, and has no idea what he's talking about. He's spreading dangerous misinformation that would lead people to believe they are essentially screwed for life over any arrest and/or conviction when that is not the case at all, anyone that works in the legal system in any capacity (right down to legal aids and clerks) can tell you that, and any 30 second search on DDG could confirm.
