Blah
BLUF: It's a mix, leaning mostly right.
The majority of what I've seen has been towards the right. There are absolutely those who lean left but I wouldn't go as far as calling (most of) them lefties. Liberal, yes, but a more normal type of person. Not the raging lunatics we've been seeing for the past 4 years.
I'm regularly able to have conversations with liberal coworkers that don't devolve into insult matches and gotcha-style arguments. In fact, this whole BLM thing has dropped a massive red pill on one of the most ardent bernie bros who I've talked a lot with. Our Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, CMSgt Wright (a black American), took it upon himself to say that he is George Floyd and a host of other criminals who were killed doing criminal things. He opposed that -- vehemently -- and thinks it's just driving a wedge between white and black Airmen. Additionally, he opposes the fact that Chief Wright used his position as the senior enlisted Airman to push a political agenda that will cause discrimination and also calls for more black Airmen in higher ranks. How will he do that? Are black Airmen going to receive extra points on board scores or WAPS tests? Sounds racist to me... Through the discussion we've had since, I can tell he's seriously reconsidering things politically.
Many of the younger kids coming in (18-22ish) reject leftist ideals altogether. One Airman told me a story about his mom, a radical leftist, who told him to vote for Obama in 2012 or he would be kicked out of his house. He had just graduated high school that May and was working to pay for his community college. He was questioning the things Obama was doing and his mother couldn't stand that. Instead, he said fuck that I'm not voting for Obama, dropped out of college, enlisted, and stopped all contact with his mother. Kudos to him for getting out of an abusive household and having the gumption to make and follow through on an extremely difficult decision.
I do have one very confused younger Airman. He's 23, and leans very far left. The problem is he only spouts leftist talking points (headlines only no substance!). You can see his programming actually breaking down when a clear argument is put up against his. He honestly struggles when this happens. I like to think he's reconsidering, but normally he'll end up moving the goalposts or shifting his way out of the hot seat. He's very clearly in the minority in our office, yet one thing that stands out is that no one stops him from putting his opinion out there -- unlike himself!
I also know a black Airman from a previous base who is the most racist person I've ever met. Calling for "whities" to stop "trying to fuck n**** women", saying "all whites are racist", etc. Regularly dropped N-bombs at work. Treating me and all of the other white Airman in the office like we are subhuman scum. When we were deployed together, everyone was out doing FOD walk. My expeditor asked me (SSgt at the time) to round up anyone inside and get them out to do FOD walk. Went inside and he was the only one there. Asked him to come out to FOD walk, he stood up and puffed his chest out and said, "it's because I'm black isn't it?" No dude. You're the ONLY person not doing FOD walk. He took me to MEO -- fortunately the truth came out and I was fine. Imo he was honestly just a BLM activist in a uniform, and the military has no fucking place for that.
Sorry this got so long-winded. Lots of stories to tell. I didn't even talk about the many positive stories of coworkers who lean right or have seen what President Trump has done and have decided to vote for him this year. Overall I'd say the enlisted Air Force leans right, but there are still lefties sewing divisiveness throughout the ranks.
