In Worlds of Warcraft players choose one of two sides. The Alliance which is all the humans, elfs, gnomes, and such of a certain monarchist elite fantasy archetypes, and The Horde which includes the usual "bad guy" archetypes like Orcs, undead, and most importantly to this question, Trolls.
To make the game more interesting, players from different sides can see each other's chat, but the chat is transliterated to make it feel like the other side speaks a different language. That's where the whole LOL=KEK thing came in.
It took off because the denizens of r/pol were basically the off-cast individuals that felt isolated and abandoned by the major political parties. "Deplorables" if you will. So obviously they identified more heavily with the Hoard side of WoW and there was a big cross over in fan base. So saying "KEK" instead of "LOL" was the mark of a troll.
As always, the cancel culture liberals who have no sense of humor and absolutely can not STAND being made fools of seriously overreacted to KEK because they didn't get what it was, but knew they were being made fun of. Their reaction to it is really what cemented it as part of our culture. Just saying "kek" in response to a post would freak them out and make them go on about secret dark web "supremacist" organizations.
Then President Trump rode down an escalator and gave the right leaning deplorables at R/pol a hero to rally behind and the rest is history.
