You do need real ammo and do need to practice at the range, but this will teach you how to shoot and can fix problems like trigger jerking.
With ammo being stupid expensive right now this is a great way to stay sharp without spending a fortune in ammo costs.
Edit to add: get some defensive ammo if you haven't. I carry this in my 9mm
If you have to defend your home, full metal jacket ammo will go through a lot of stuff if you miss and might just go through the bad guy. Get something that stops in both walls and bad guys.
