Reason: Fuzzy memory confused the book and miniseries

Yeah Sowell points this out in the chapter about the real history of slavery, I believe. The book Roots is (as was the intent of the author) a myth with only one foot in historical fact. So yes, many black Americans (and whites as well) DO believe that, just as the book shows, white slavers went inland to hunt for slaves rather than buying them at markets as was the world standard at the time.

Yeah Sowell points this out in the chapter about the real history of slavery, I believe. The film Roots, which is (as was the intent of the filmmaker) a myth with only one foot in historical fact, is shown to nearly every student in public school. So yes, many black Americans (and whites as well) DO believe that, just as the film shows, white slavers went inland to hunt for slaves rather than buying them at markets as was the world standard at the time.
