In general nobody goes from being New York mayor to being president. But saving New York would make you a historic figure.

DeBlasio was opposed in his first election by an interesting self made billionaire named Castimitides, who owns Gristedes, and another man whoever he was. Two opponents, not one, to split any opposition to him. At that time he was not especially well known. He easily got his second term because well he was an established fact. There isn't a lot of opposition in areas like this and not just in New York, state or city.
